Kids Educational Games
For those of us who grew up with board games, the concept that kids can play educational games on the computer may seem like a foreign concept. However, we have learned that educational board games are not the only way our kids learn while playing. Our children today adapt to the computer so easily, that it may seem easy for us to dismiss the high quality learning value that comes with educational computer games. In our family, we prefer to invest only in computer games where our children are actually learning something, like letters or math.
It’s important to realize that the computer is a powerful learning tool when used in the right application. It can also be an incredible waste of time when your child is just moving through levels with no real education. They may be just shooting things to collect coins or stars. Although this is a great diversion, what are your children really learning?
Today’s parents shoulder the extra burden of pre-qualifying the computer and TV software that occupies our children’s hours. Our children love the Wii and would prefer spending all their time on Mario Galaxy and Lego Star Wars. But we let them have Wii Fit time four times as often as free choice games. This ends up being a win-win situation even though they do complain. Once they start playing Wii Fit, they love the challenge. And the parents are happy because they are exercising.
Our children have learned the alphabet, counting, basic reading, early math and several other skills by playing educational computer games. Our children are moving into a world that is dominated by computers. Just like many of us have learned to monitor our children’s TV viewing habits, we can do the same for computer habits.
The most important thing to remember is that your children’s minds are completely open to all suggestions that are presented while they are playing. We are the guardians of these minds and carefully chosen kid’s educational games help to play your kids smarter.
